Generation Supply Bidding in Perfectly Competitive Electricity Markets

چکیده
This paper reports on the development of a comprehensive framework for the analysis and formulation of bids in competitive electricity markets. Competing entities submit offers of power and energy to meet the next day's load. We use the England and Wales Power Pool as the basis for the development of a very general competitive power pool (CPP) framework. The framework provides the basis for solving the CPP dispatcher problem and for specifying the optimal bidding strategies. The CPP dispatcher selects the winning bids for the right to serve load each period of the scheduling horizon. The dispatcher must commit sufficient generation to meet the forecasted load and reserve requirements throughout the scheduling horizon. All the unique constraints under which electrical generators operate including start-up and shutdown time restrictions, reserve requirements and unit output limits must be taken into account. We develop an analytical formulation of the problem faced by a bidder in the CPP by specifying a strategy that maximizes his profits. The optimal bidding strategy is solved analytically for the case of perfect competition. The study in this work takes into account the principal sources of uncertainty—the load forecast and the actions of the other competitors. The formulation and solution methodology effectively exploit a Lagrangian relaxation based approach. We have conducted a wide range of numerical studies; a sample of numerical results are presented to illustrate the robustness and superiority of the analytically developed bidding strategies.

A Comprehensive Survey on GenCos’ Optimal Bidding Strategy Problem in Competitive Power Markets
This paper represents a complete survey on Generation Companies’ (GenCos’) optimal bidding strategy problem in restructured power markets. In this regard after an introduction to competitive electricity markets, concept of optimal bidding strategy is presented. Considering large amount of works accomplished in this area a novel classification is implemented in order to categorize the existing d...
متن کاملImpact of Participants’ Market Power and Transmission Constraints on GenCos’ Nash Equilibrium Point
Unlike perfect competitive markets, in oligopoly electricity markets due to strategic producers and transmission constraints GenCos may increase their own profit through strategic biddings. This paper investigates the problem of developing optimal bidding strategies of GenCos considering participants’ market power and transmission constraints. The problem is modeled as a bi-level optimizati...
متن کاملOptimal Bidding Strategies of GENCOs in Day-Ahead Energy and Spinning Reserve Markets Based on Hybrid GA-Heuristic Optimization Algorithm
In an electricity market, every generation company (GENCO) attempts to maximize profit according to other participants bidding behaviors and power systems operating conditions. The goal of this study is to examine the optimal bidding strategy problem for GENCOs in energy and spinning reserve markets based on a hybrid GA-heuristic optimization algorithm. The heuristic optimization algorithm used...
متن کاملBidding Strategy in Spot Markets with Definition of a New Market Power Index by Using Conjectural Variation
In this paper, the concept of Conjectural Variation (CV) is used to specify optimal generation decision for generation companies (Gencos). The conjecture of Genco is defined as its belief or expectation about the reaction of rivals to change of its output. Using CV method, each Genco has to learn and estimate strategic behaviors of other competitors from available historical market operation da...
متن کاملModeling and Detecting Bidding Anomalies in Day-ahead Electricity Markets
Virtual bids were introduced in U.S. wholesale electricity markets to exploit arbitrage opportunities arising from expected price differences between day-ahead and real-time energy markets. These financial instruments have interactions with other elements of the electricity market design. For instance, virtual bids could affect day-ahead market-clearing prices so as to enhance the value of Fina...
